White label vs private label: which one fits your brand?

Both let you sell a product under your own brand without owning a factory. The difference is how much of the product is yours — and that changes your upfront cost, your MOQ, your time to market and how easily a competitor can copy you.

When white label makes sense

You want to test a niche before committing cash, extend an existing brand with a complementary product, or launch for a season. Common white label categories: supplements, skincare basics, coffee and tea, candles, apparel blanks, phone accessories, cleaning products. The risk: on marketplaces like Amazon, identical products end up competing on price alone.

When private label makes sense

You've validated demand and want a product customers can only get from you — a better formula, a material upgrade, a size nobody offers, packaging that stands out. You'll need a clear spec, more cash up front and more time, but you're building an asset rather than renting one. Many brands start white label and move to private label once a product sells.

How to find a manufacturer for each

Either way, ask several manufacturers the same questions so you can compare quotes on landed cost — the free RFQ template helps.

Frequently asked questions

Is white labeling legal?

Yes. Selling a manufacturer's generic product under your own brand is standard practice, as long as labelling meets your market's rules (ingredients, country of origin, warnings) and you don't infringe someone else's trademark or patent.

Is private label more profitable than white label?

Usually, per unit — because a differentiated product faces less direct price competition. But it needs more cash and time up front, so white label can be the more profitable first step while you test demand.

Can I switch from white label to private label later?

Yes, and it's a common path: launch with a white label product, learn what customers want, then develop a customized version with the same or a new manufacturer.

Does HireDov work for both?

Yes. Dov sources ready-made white label products and custom private label or contract manufacturing — in any category.
